“Radio sentences should be short.”

That was my first lesson on my very first day as an intern for NPR’s All Things Considered.

They were words uttered in September, 1999 by the show’s longtime host, Robert Siegel. I had been plopped onto his office couch in Washington, DC while a producer went to the NPR library to get any information she could find about East Timor, which was in the news that day.

I was only 17 at the time, on a gap year between high school in central Illinois and college in central Illinois, and had never heard of…

I’ve been reading, watching and listening to the reaction to President Biden’s infrastructure proposal, and one of the key criticisms from Republicans is that most of what’s in the bill is not actually infrastructure.

The Merriam-Webster definition of infrastructure is “the system of public works of a country, state or region. Also: the resources (such as personnel, buildings, or equipment) required for an activity.”

Certainly that would include the 620 billion dollars the bill proposes for upgrading the nation’s roads, bridges and other transportation infrastructure. Even Senator Minority Leader Mitch McConnell believes that counts. “Infrastructure is roads, is bridges. It’s…

Florida’s Republican Governor Ron Desantis is back in the news, after 60 Minutes alleged that Desantis steered the state to partner with the supermarket chain Publix for COVID-19 vaccinations. The story goes that Desantis chose Publix because of nearly $200,000 in contributions to his political action committee from the chain and people with close ties to it.

Desantis denies this, and in a Trump-like move, is turning the tables to attack the media for what he calls a “false narrative.”

Though this may sound like a regional spat, how it plays out matters a great deal both for Desantis and…

No really, it is!

President Biden has unveiled his multi-trillion dollar proposal to upgrade the nation’s roads, bridges, rail systems, ports, airports and more, while also tackling inequity and climate change, and attempting to put the United States in a better competitive position with regards to China. And after his experience with the American Rescue Plan, which got no Republican votes in Congress, he appears to be prepared to pass this plan in the same manner.

I’ve been a bit of an infrastructure geek for many years, which is why just about every time I took my radio shows on…

I guess I picked the wrong week to claim my British citizenship.

I’m an American by birth but my father is English, and as a result I have always been eligible for a British passport, but until now I never had the time to get the documents I needed to do so. As soon as the passport arrived, friends started telling me it wasn’t as good now that Britain had left the EU (thanks for the reminder!) And now, everyone wants to know what I think about Meghan and Harry.

Well, here’s what I think. The Oprah interview has clearly…

March 3rd, 2021

There were two big pieces of news on the COVID front yesterday. And one was far more important than the other.

The first was the news that the Republican governors of Texas and Mississippi are repealing their state-wide mask mandates and all or nearly all restrictions on businesses.

The second was President Biden’s announcement that there will be enough vaccine supply for all American adults by the end of May. That’s two months ahead of schedule.

There was understandable outrage about the lifting of restrictions in Texas and Mississippi. After all, the head of the CDC just…

I wanted to share with you that I’ll be leaving Here & Now.

This month marks ten years since I started hosting a daily national program and what a decade it has been.

When I joined the Here & Now team in 2013, I did so with one goal in mind: to grow the show into the Morning Edition or All Things Considered of the midday.

Since then, we have tripled our audience to more than 5 million listeners and we are broadcasting to almost every radio market in this country. …
